Do I need a boating license to rent?

California requires a California Boater Card for anyone operating a motorized vessel or personal watercraft, regardless of age — this applies to all operators as of 2025. Sailboats and guided excursions can be booked with a licensed captain if you don't hold one. See CA Harbors and Navigation Code §678.11 or ask us for details.

What's the minimum age to rent?

Renters must be 18+ to book and sign the rental agreement. Vessel operators must meet California's minimum age and California Boater Card requirements. Minors are welcome as passengers or under direct supervision of a renting adult who is operating the vessel.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

Safety comes first. If conditions are unsafe (high winds, storms, small craft advisories), we will reschedule or fully refund your booking at no charge — this applies even under our standard cancellation policy. See our full Cancellation & Weather Policy for details.

What's included in the rental rate?

Every rental includes required safety gear (Coast Guard-approved life jackets and mandatory equipment), a pre-departure safety briefing, and a vessel that has been inspected between rentals. Fuel, captain add-ons, and multi-day rates vary by class — ask when you request to book.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes — a deposit is required to confirm most bookings. See our Cancellation & Weather Policy for deposit and refund terms.

Can I cancel or reschedule my booking?

Yes, within the windows set out in our Cancellation & Weather Policy — this is a strict, tiered policy, so please read it carefully before booking.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. SOPIF operates as a licensed rental business and carries commercial marine insurance coverage for our fleet. Ask us for documentation before booking.
